<p> DIED. Lawrence Durrell, 78, British novelist and poet,
whose lyrical The Alexandria Quartet (Justine, Balthazar,
Mountolive and Clea), a series of four novels set in the
Egyptian city during the 1930s and '40s, was a best seller in
the 1950s and 1960s; in Sommieres, France. Durrell maintained
a prolific 45-year correspondence with American author Henry
Miller.
